A new device called August aims to do
what Nest did for thermostats.

Designed by the makers of the Jawbone fitness band, August brings the concept of sharing a key into the 21st century.

A sleek, hi-tech deadbolt and companion iPhone app allow you to unlock and lock your door without the need of a physical key. Access codes for your lock can even be sent to friends and family using the August app.
The August Smart Lock is the secure, simple, and social way to manage your home’s lock. Now you can control who can enter and who can’t—without the need for keys or codes. And you can do it all from your smartphone or computer.

A smooth, metallic cylinder replaces your traditional door lock. Intelligent LEDs illuminate and sounds chime to let you know when the lock is enabled or disabled. Four AA batteries provide power.

The August iPhone app is where the magic really happens. Bluetooth is used to recognize when an approved iPhone is in range of the lock. If you have a friend coming over for the weekend, you can grant them access via the app for a limited time or indefinitely. A log record is kept showing who has locked and unlocked the door. Notes and photos can even be left at the door for a friend or family member, like a digital guestbook.

August is set to go on sale later this year with shipping slated for late fall. The lock will cost $200. Reservations are being taken now on the August’s website.
